Plot[edit]

The film's plot is based on Philip Meadows Taylor's 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug,[4][5] about a thug (also known as a thuggee) called Ameer Ali, whose gang of thugs posed a serious challenge to the British Empire in India during the early 19th century.[4] The film tells a fictional story set between 1790 and 1805.[6]

Cast[edit]

  • Amitabh Bachchan as Ismail, a high-ranking thug and the adoptive father of Ameer Ali[4]
  • Aamir Khan as Ameer Ali, a prominent thug of ethnic Afghan origin, orphaned as a child and raised by thugs.[4]
  • Fawad Khan

Production[edit]

The film's production budget is 210 crore (US$31 million), making it the most expensive Yash Raj Films productions, along with Tiger Zinda Hai (2017).[1][8] Filming commenced on 5 June 2017 in Malta. The film will be shot in Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur.[9] It is also being shot in Thailand.[10] The film's climax will be filmed in Rajasthan.[11]

Amitabh Bachchan suffered with neck and back pain due to the heavy clothing and stunts in the film.[12][13][14][15][16][17]

This is Khan's second time collaborating with Vijay Krishna Acharya and Katrina Kaif, after Dhoom 3 (2013).[18] The film will have a dance sequence featuring Bachchan, choreographed by Prabhu Deva.[19] It will also reportedly feature sea battles similar to ones seen in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean.[4]

Jackie Shroff was to be a part of the film, but had to turn the role down due to conflicting commitments.[20]

Release[edit]

It is scheduled to release on 7 November 2018.
