On June 24, 2016 it was reported that Anil Kapoor would be the lead actor in Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Fanney Khan being directed by Atul Manjrekar in his directorial debut.[2][3] In October 2016, it was reported that Priyanka Chopra had been approached to be a part of Fanney Khan but even though the actress had shown interest in the project, talks didn't materialize between her and the producers.[4][5] In June 2017, KriArj Entertainment came on board to produce[6] the film along with T-Series and it was officially announced that Aishwarya Rai would be the lead actress in the film.[7][8][9] In August 2017, reports emerged saying that R. Madhavan had been finalized to play the lead opposite Aishwarya Rai in the film[10][11], but towards the end of August it was confirmed by Madhavan himself that he won't be doing the film due to scheduling conflicts,[12][13] while at the same time it was made official by the producers that Rajkummar Rao had been signed to play the role opposite Aishwarya Rai.[14][15]

The principal photography of the film commenced on 3 September 2017 in Mumbai.[16][17] The initial shooting schedule involved only Anil Kapoor, Divya Dutta and debutant actress Pihu Sand while Rajkummar Rao and Aishwarya Rai joined the shoot on October 3, 2017.[18] On October 6, 2017 it was reported that Aishwarya Rai refused to shoot as she wasn't satisfied with the costumes assigned to her in the film and as a result of that shooting was postponed to the end of October and Aishwarya's dress designer, Manish Malhotra, was asked to redesign the clothes.[19] Shooting was supposed to resume on October 26, 2017 but had to be further postponed because Rajkummar Rao had fractured his leg while shooting for Farah Khan's television show Lip Sing Battle.[20] Aishwarya Rai started shooting her scenes with Anil Kapoor on 5 November 2017 in Mumbai.[21][22]

In April 2018, the shooting of Fanney Khan was stalled by crew members due to non-payment of dues.[23] That was the fourth time a KriArj Entertainment production got entangled in a financial controversy. KriArj had to part ways with Parmanu, Kedarnath and Batti Gul Meter Chalu after facing a similar issue.[24][25] In May 2018, KriArj Entertainment opted out of Fanney Khan to resolve all matters concerning the production house and as a result of that Bhushan Kumar of T-Series took over the task of completing the film.[26][27]

Aishwarya Rai's introduction song in the film titled Mohabbat was choreographed by Frank Gatson Jr., who has previously worked with Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Rihanna.[28][29]

On 19 June 2018, the final shooting schedule of the film was completed at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai.[30][31]

Fanney Khan was initially scheduled for an Eid release[32][33] on 15 June 2018 but was later postponed to 3 August 2018.[1]

After the release of Fanney Khan's trailer and poster in June 2018, Vashu Bhagnani sent a legal notice to it's producers for not crediting him as the distributor and co-producer of the film. As per Bhagnani's claim, he had entered into an agreement with Prernaa Arora of KriArj Entertainment to acquire the all India distribution rights of the film, which also entitled him to be credited as co-producer of the film.[34] Replying to this, Ankit Relan from the legal team of T-Series said that T-Series was never consulted or informed about this arrangement and since the movie is being jointly produced by multiple producers, KriArj Entertainment does not have the right to grant distribution rights to anyone without taking consent from them.[35] In a hearing that took place in July 2018, the Delhi High Court restrained Vashu Bhagnani from interfering in the distribution and release of Fanney Khan.[36]
